Notes: Emigrated from Perthshire , Scotland in 1843 with his wife and 8 children, his older sister, Janet and a children's governess, Catherine Janet Nichol. Sister believed to have died en route. Bought 245 acres of land in 12th Concession of Beckwith Township, Lanark County , Upper Canada . Was said to have lived with nephew, James, on 11th Concession while erecting first a log house. In 1845 began to erect a stone house which was named Orena Villa. Had a sawmill on property. Orena Villa had the last water rights in Canada . Hardware for house brought from Scotland . Believed stone brought from Scotland as ballast - stone not native to Lanark County .

William was a stonemason and his wife operated a grocery business in Bankfoot, Perthshire, before emigrating.
